Posted: 01/05/2010 ComponentOne has released the 2010 version of its Studio Enterprise component super-bundle. Heading the new features list are Visual Studio 2010 compatibility and a new AJAX framework with jQuery and DynamicData 4.0 support. Also included are new Winform controls, extra WPF controls ported from Silverlight, Silverlight 4.0 support and migration of ComponentOne’s iPhone web app controls to other leading smartphones.

Posted: 01/05/2010 Adobe has launched its much-anticipated Creative Suite 5 (CS5), a major upgrade to its design tools product range. The suite comes in five editions offering varying combinations of Adobe’s Photoshop (bitmap graphics), InDesign (DTP), Illustrator (vector graphics), Dreamweaver (Web development), Premiere (video editing) and Flash authoring applications, plus supporting products.

Microsoft ships Office 2010

Posted: 01/05/2010 Visual Studio 2010 isn’t Microsoft’s only major launch this spring – Office 2010, the latest release of the company’s all-conquering application suite, is already shipping to volume customers and due on retail shelves by early June. Key features include improved collaboration and rich media handling, ribbon toolbars across the whole suite, the first 64-bit Office versions and the release of the much-awaited Office Web applications.

Crystal Reports unbundled from VS2010 but free from SAP

Posted: 01/05/2010 If you’ve checked your copy of Visual Studio 2010 and found Crystal Reports missing, don’t panic as Crystal’s owners, software giant SAP, have removed it from the VS bundle and are offering it as a free download instead. You may have to wait a while for the final version though, and if you develop server-side apps for resale, you may have to buy a new licence.

VS2010 launch slips as Microsoft works on performance

Posted: 01/03/2010 The launch date for Microsoft’s much-anticipated Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 has been put back from 22 March to 12 April, after feedback from users of Beta 2 (see HardCopy News, issue 46) indicated concerns about performance and virtual memory usage. Unify Q works with Oracle 10g and 11g and SQL Server 2005 and 2008, as well as the company’s own SQLBase and ODBC sources. Using an Office 2007-style interface, it provides a graphical query builder with table joining hints and single-click report generation, plus a detailed report builder with support for images, graphs and crosstabs. The British company, which specialises in converting voicemail messages to SMS and email, had gone through a series of refinancings in the previous 18 months and was widely rumoured to be up for sale.
